Children from four local schools have been working with musicians Zoe Conway, Barry Hynes and composer Elaine Agnew in recent months on an exciting new Music Generation Louth project entitled Reimagining Oriel.
This creative project delves into the rich musical tradition of Oriel, giving children from Dulargy NS, Ardaghy NS, Rathcor NS and Scoil Naomh Lorcan the opportunity to learn songs and tunes of the local area as well as create their own songs and polkas.
Inspiration for the project came from the work of local Sean Nos singer Padraigin Ní Uallachain Hidden Ulster, People Songs and traditions of Oriel. The children got the chance to meet Padraigin last month when she visited the schools as part of the project to perform a selection of traditional songs from Oriel and to hear some new music that the children had created.
Workshops are continuing this month and the children will come together to perform as part of Féile na Tána Festival in Carlingford on Saturday 7 February 2015.
Reimagining Songs and Music of Oriel has been funded under the Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership Programme.
